THREE children of Lundazi have died after they were hit by a Volvo truck and trailer which lost control due to excessive speed.
The children who are deceased are believed to be aged nine and the third aged 10 and are said to have been pedestrians who were walking on the side of the road when the driver lost control and hit them.
Zambia police deputy spokesperson Danny Mwale in an interview said the accident happened today around 10:00 hours along Lundazi and Chama gravel road on Great North road of Lundazi town.
He said the driver of the Volvo truck registration Mark BAR 6778 and trailer number ALV6069 was being driven by Thomas Chanda, 25, of Lusaka.
“The driver was carrying five passengers and his passengers all escaped unhurt. However pedestrians Kaunda Madela aged nine sustained internal injuries, Lusungu Mwale aged nine sustained a deep cut on the left and head injuries and they both died on the spot, while Clement Phiri aged 10 sustained a cut on the forehead and fractured left shoulder and died in hospital were he was admitted,” he said.
Mr Mwale said the accident occurred due to excessive speed, hence the driver lost control and hit the pedestrians who were in front of him on the left lane.
He added that the driver has been detained and the bodies of the children are in the mortuary awaiting postmortem.
