Chilubi aspiring Member of Parliament Christabel Kalasa has emphasised that the role of traditional leaders in driving community development cannot be overemphasised, describing them as key partners in achieving meaningful progress on Chilubi Island.

Kalasa says once given the opportunity to serve, she plans to establish Village Development Committees in every ward, ensuring that chiefs, headmen and village elders are directly involved in decision-making and development planning.

She explained that her approach will place traditional leaders at the centre of development, ensuring that progress reaches every village fairly, effectively, and in a way that respects local customs and leadership structures.

“In Chilubi Island, traditional leadership holds a place of deep respect and cultural significance. Chiefs, headmen, and village elders are custodians of our heritage, unity, and social order. They are not only leaders but also trusted voices who guide and influence their communities,” Kalasa said.

The aspiring lawmaker further pledged to empower traditional leaders through capacity building programmes, community development funding and agricultural support initiatives aimed at improving livelihoods across the island.

Kalasa stated that under her plan, traditional leaders would benefit from training workshops in governance, project management and community mobilisation to enhance their effectiveness in promoting development.

“I will work to empower traditional leadership through practical and impactful initiatives, including capacity building workshops in training traditional leaders in governance, project management, and community mobilization to enhance their effectiveness,” she said.

She added that involving local leadership is essential for inclusive development, stating that sustainable progress can only be achieved when communities are fully engaged through their respected traditional authorities.

Kalasa stressed that by strengthening traditional leadership and working hand-in-hand with local communities, Chilubi Island can experience inclusive, respectful and long-lasting development
