The Zambia Police Service says a fatal road traffic accident in Chongwe District has claimed the lives of two students and left three others seriously injured.
The accident occurred around 05:00 hours along Chalimbana Road in Silverest area, off the Great East Road. It involved a Honda Fit, registration number BLD 5008, driven by Patrick Musonda (22), a student at the University of Lusaka (UNILUS) and resident of Silverest.
Police say preliminary investigations indicate the driver was speeding and failed to negotiate a curve, causing the vehicle to veer off the road and crash into a tree. The front section of the car was extensively damaged.
The deceased have been identified as Edify Chikumbi (22–26) – pronounced dead at Chongwe District Hospital and Maseka Chilapala (20–25) – pronounced dead at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital.
Their bodies have since been deposited at the respective hospital mortuaries pending postmortem examinations.
The driver, Patrick Musonda, sustained multiple injuries and is admitted at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital.
Two other passengers – Akufuna Mwituna (21) of Silverest and John Msenge – also sustained multiple injuries and are receiving treatment at the same facility.
Police have opened an inquiry file, with investigations into the accident ongoing.
This is according to a statement issued by Zambia Police Public Relations Officer , Godfrey Chilabi.
A week ago three students from Mulungushi University died after the car they were in overturned on the Great North Road near their campus.
