UPPZ President Charles Chanda Reacts to ECZ Disqualification: “I’m Not Bankrupt, How Can Someone Worth K5 Billion Be Bankrupt?”

United Party for Prosperous Zambia (UPPZ) President Charles Chanda has strongly reacted to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) decision to disqualify him from contesting in the August 13, 2026 General Election, insisting that he is not bankrupt.

Speaking in response to the development, Chanda dismissed claims linked to his alleged financial status, questioning how he could be declared bankrupt when he says he is worth billions.

“I’m not bankrupt. How can someone worth K5 billion be bankrupt?” Chanda said.

The UPPZ leader described the ECZ decision as shocking and unfair, arguing that he remains financially stable and capable of contesting the upcoming elections.

Charles Chanda’s remarks have since sparked mixed reactions among Zambians on social media, with some supporting his stance while others demand clarity on the matter surrounding his eligibility.

The ECZ has not yet issued further details on the grounds of his disqualification beyond the reports that the decision is connected to bankruptcy-related eligibility requirements under electoral guidelines.

As Zambia heads toward the highly anticipated 2026 General Elections, the disqualification of high-profile aspiring candidates such as Charles Chanda is expected to generate continued public debate.

More updates are expected as the UPPZ leadership considers its next steps regarding the matter.
