The Government of the Republic of Zambia has confirmed that Vice President Dr. W.K. Mutale Nalumango is safe after a Zambia Air Force (ZAF) helicopter carrying her was involved in an accident during take-off in Nakonde, Muchinga Province.
According to an official statement issued on July 9, 2026, the incident occurred earlier in the day while the Vice President was on an official visit to the region.
Vice President and Crew Safe
The Government said Vice President Nalumango, all passengers and the flight crew escaped unharmed following the incident.
As a precautionary measure, the Vice President was taken to a nearby medical facility for a routine medical examination.
She was later discharged after doctors confirmed she was in good health.
“Her Honour the Vice-President and all passengers and crew are safe and well. As a standard precaution, she was taken to a nearby medical facility for a routine check and has since been discharged. The Vice-President is in good health,” the statement read.
Government Commends Flight Crew
The Government praised the professionalism displayed by the Zambia Air Force flight crew and emergency responders who handled the situation.
Authorities also thanked the people of Nakonde for their swift response and assistance following the incident.
The statement noted that the quick actions of those on the ground helped ensure the safety of everyone on board.
Investigations to Establish Cause
Government has announced that the relevant authorities will conduct investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the helicopter incident.
No further details have yet been released regarding what caused the accident during take-off.
Officials said the matter will be handled through the normal investigative process.
Vice President to Continue Official Duties
Despite the incident, Government has confirmed that Vice President Mutale Nalumango will continue with her official programme of work.
