Why do we hate the living, but love the dead?

It is amazing how we react as “humans” whenever we hear that a “loved” one has died. WhatsApp groups are quickly formed. huge contributions towards the funeral start coming. Meals to feed “hundreds” of mourners are bought, whilst on the other hand, “family” members are arranging to purchase an expensive “casket” for the deceased. Women make committees to buy “Chitenge”, men also print t-shirts with “claims” of how they’ll would miss you and wishing you to rest in peace. Your grave is decorated with nice “flowers”. Sweet speeches are given during your burial. They then depart the graveyard having spent “huge” amounts of money during your funeral.

Isn’t that stupidity or hypocrisy at play? I think it is actually foolish of us showing love to a “dead” body or lifeless human when we failed to do that when that individual we claim to love was alive. Shockingly, you would find that maybe someone just need K100 or less to get some drugs or probably go to the clinic, but we ignored that call for help and we would rather spend a K100,000 on a dead body.

Friends, as we approach 2026, my prayer for you and I is that may God change our way of doing things. May we begin showing true love to one another away from showing off in social media. May we adopt a culture of checking on one another both in good and bad times. May we help one another without expecting to receive anything in return.

Give me flowers now than you decorating my grave with roses because I will not be able to see the beauty once am gone. It pains me seeing a lot of people at one’s funeral when we couldn’t visit them at their home during difficult times.

May God help us become better “Human” beings that we ought to be and live like Christ did.

Amen
