A 29-year-old woman of Lusaka’s John Howard Compound has been apprehended by Police for the offence of Child Stealing involving a 2 year eight months old baby.
The arrest of Jane Suzyo Banda follows a report which was made on 8th December, 2023 of a missing child, with the baby retrieved at the suspect’s house.
Police Public Relations Officer, Rae Hamoonga, explains that on 13th December, 2023, a member of the public reported that an unknown girl was seen with the missing child in Chelstone Police Camp.

He notes that Police instituted investigations and managed to identify the person, a juvenile aged 19 within Chelstone Police Camp.
Hamoonga says upon being interviewed, she revealed that on 9th December, 2023 around 10:00 hours, a woman who was selling dry fish in the camp known as Jane Banda, approached her and decided to leave the child with her.
This was with a view to go and sell fish within the camp, of which she only came back after three hours and left with the child.
Hamoonga adds that on 13th December, 2023 around 18:50 hours within Chelstone area, the suspect was apprehended and the following day, she led Officers to her house where the child was retrieved.
He adds that the child has since been issued with a medical report form and taken to the hospital for a medical check-up.
