A 32-YEAR-OLD woman of Kabwe who admitted stealing two cases of Castle Lite valued at K167 from Shoprite at Kabwe Mall has been sentenced to two months simple imprisonment.
Tracy Mumba, of Lukanga Township, pleaded guilty to one count of theft before magistrate Godwin Kunda yesterday.
However, the magistrate suspended the sentence to community service, failure to which Mumba will serve time in a correctional facility.
“I sentence you to two months simple imprisonment effective today (yesterday). However, I suspend it for 21 days on condition that you do community service, and should you even miss a day, I will send you to prison,” the magistrate said.
Mumba, who was rebuked for her insatiable appetite for alcohol, which led to her stealing from a supermarket, is expected to do community work at Kabwe Magistrates Court.
The magistrate said theft is a serious offence with a maximum sentence of five years imprisonment.
Mumba, who has two children, aged 10 and six, had pleaded for leniency.
“Appetite for beer should be controlled. You need to change your behaviour and become a role model,” the magistrate counselled her.
