World Press Freedom day 2026 takes shape in Zambia

The Local Organising Committee of the World Press Freedom Day (WPFD) 2026, led by Chairperson Arthur Davies Sikopo, has announced that preparations for this year’s commemoration are underway.

Under the theme ‘Shaping a future of Peace’, international award winning journalist, Sikopo says the WPFD 2026 promises to bring together media professionals and partners from Zambia and around the world.

He disclosed that the official launch will take place on April 27, 2026, with Minister of Information and Media, Cornelius Mweetwa, in attendance.

Activities include a march past from Civic Centre to Freedom Statue on May 3, followed by a commemoration ceremony.

“The WPFD Committee members will also undertake a site visit to the University Teaching Adult Hospital in Lusaka on 2nd May to inspect the fruit trees donated and planted by the committee.
The main commemoration activities will kick off at 08.30 hours with a march past from Civic Centre to Freedom Statue on 3rd May,” a statement issued by Sikopo read.

Sikopo further announced that a Global Conference from 4-5 May and hosted by UNESCO in collaboration with the Zambian government and coordinated by the Media Liaison Committee will be followed.

Over 1, 000 delegates from Zambia and across the globe are expected to participate in the Global Conference.

“The Local WPFD Organising Committee invites all media houses, partners and friends of the media to join in the commemoration of WPFD 2026. The LOC appeals for support from stakeholders to make this event a success,” he added.
