Mary Mhango a young boxer who minted gold at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 games in Maseru Lesotho has disclosed that she is determined to bring another gold at this year’s games in Lilongwe Malawi.
Mhango says she is eager to face her opponents and make the region know that Zambia has talent in boxing.
She says as a vice-captain for the boxers bound for the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Region 5 Games she is ready to step into the ring and knock out her opponents and bring glory to Zambia.
‘’I am very ready for these games. As you know during the Maseru games in Lesotho I won a gold medal and I am going to do the same this year. My competitors should watch out for me’’ she said.
Mhango and her fellow boxers including other athletes making up team Zambia are currently in camp at the OYDC Zambia – Sports Development Centre preparing for the games which will commence on 2-11 December.
And male boxer Mwango Mwale who also minted a medal silver in Maseru Lesotho says the team is geared for Malawi adding that his only competition will be boxers from South Africa.
Meanwhile, boxing coach Maybin Gunduza has declared his boxers fit and ready for the games. He says boxers are responding well to training adding that history will be made again by making sure that boxers come back home with medals.
‘’We are expecting good results in Malawi. The boxers are responding well to training and as you can see here [OYDC] we are in camp and all is set for us to go and showcase our boxers’ skills in the ring and mint medals’ he said.
Team Zambia consists of 321 athletes and 87 officials which include coaches.
The 10th edition of the Region 5 Games themed ‘Igniting the African Dream’ to be hosted by Malawi will see Zambia taking athletes in twelve sports codes namely; athletics, athletics VI, basketball, boxing, football, judo, swimming, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, netball and E-sports.
Members of the Region 5 comprise Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Eswatini formerly called Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
