ZAM Breaks Down IBA Warning on Music and Video Content as “Budget” Debate Continues

The Zambia Association of Musicians (ZAM) has issued a public reminder to artists, DJs, and broadcasters following a recent notice released by the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) regarding the type of music and video content being aired on television and radio stations.

In a statement shared online, ZAM said the IBA has officially reminded everyone involved in music production, music videos, DJing, and broadcasting that all content must remain consistent with Zambian cultural values, norms, and expectations.

IBA Wants Zambian Music to Reflect National Values

ZAM emphasised that the IBA’s message is aimed at ensuring that music being played across the country represents Zambia positively, especially since entertainment content has a major influence on young people.

“As artists and DJs, you have the power to shape how people think, especially our kids,” ZAM stated.

The association stressed that Zambian creatives must remember their identity and respect their cultural roots.

“We are Zambians and MUST respect our roots,” the statement reads.

TV Stations Must Preview Videos Before Airing

ZAM further highlighted that according to the IBA’s directive, television stations must preview all music videos, movies, and visual content before airing them.

This means broadcasters have the responsibility to ensure that any content aired is appropriate and meets the required standards.

ZAM urged artists and producers to make sure their videos are “family-friendly” and suitable for the general public.

“Make sure your videos are suitable for everyone to watch,” ZAM reminded musicians.

Producers Urged to Consider Laws and Traditions

In the same message, ZAM advised video producers and directors to be mindful of Zambia’s traditions and broadcasting laws when creating content.

The association warned that filming and packaging artistic work without considering cultural sensitivity could lead to problems once content is submitted to media houses.

“Producers, please keep our laws and traditions in mind when filming and packaging your art,” ZAM stated.

DJs and Radio Presenters Told to Use Best Judgment

ZAM also issued a strong reminder to DJs and radio presenters, urging them to carefully select the type of music they play on air.

They said entertainment should not come at the cost of disrespecting the public or promoting content that contradicts national values.

“For DJs & Radio Presenters, please use your best judgment when picking songs,” the association urged.

“This Is Not Just a Suggestion” – ZAM

The association noted that the directive is not simply advice but a legal requirement under the IBA Act, meaning broadcasters and creatives must comply or risk sanctions.

“By the way, this isn’t just a suggestion, it’s part of the IBA Act,” ZAM said.

The goal, according to ZAM, is to ensure Zambia’s broadcasting space remains responsible, professional, and culturally sensitive.

ZAM Calls for Responsible Creativity

ZAM concluded by encouraging artists to continue producing quality music that uplifts the nation’s image and keeps the local industry respected.

“Let’s keep creating great music that makes Zambia proud,” the association stated.

The statement was issued by the ZAM Publicity Department.
