The outbreak of anthrax that has caused the holding up of 4,000 cattle in Sinazongwe and Namwala is posing a challenge on the supply side of Zambeef Products, says company executive director for corporate affairs and sustainability, Ezekiel Sekele.

Following the outbreak of anthrax in Southern and Western provinces, the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries imposed a ban on transportation of cattle from the affected areas.

The hotspots are some of the big suppliers of Zambeef products.

The development also entails that farmers who usually supply the cattle are deprived of their incomes.

“We have about 4,000 cattle that are safe and fully vaccinated but are quarantined in Sinazongwe, Namwala and Itezhi Tezhi since those areas are hotspots for anthrax.

“We commend Government for taking bold decisions to eradicate animal diseases. But the holding up of the animals is posing a challenge on our supply side, and also on the cost of keeping them since we are spending about K40 daily to feed one animal.

We are further engaging Government to consider possibilities of how we can be helped to move the animals out of those bulking centres while following the stringent regulations in disease prevention,” Mr Sekele said during a media engagement on Tuesday.
