The Zambia Army has apologized for an incident that took place on October 5, 2024, in Mufulira involving a section of Army recruits from Taung Up Barracks who assaulted several civilians.

Army Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Sydney Mwewa reported that three recruits were attacked by a group of taxi drivers in the Central Business District of Mufulira, resulting in one recruit sustaining various injuries and being admitted to Ronald Ross Hospital.

In a statement, Mwewa stated that upon seeing their injured comrade, the other two recruits called for reinforcement from fellow recruits, leading to acts of violence and disturbances against civilians, causing injuries and property damage.

He unequivocally condemned the recruits’ behavior, emphasizing that the Zambia Army is mandated to serve and protect the people of Zambia.

Mwewa said any actions violating this mandate are unacceptable and will not be condoned.

He stated that a thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify those responsible.

Mwewa said the perpetrators will face appropriate disciplinary measures under the Defence Act Chapter 106 of the laws of Zambia.
He extended apologies to the affected individuals and communities.

The Army Spokesperson urged the public to coexist peacefully with soldiers and refrain from provoking or harassing Army personnel, especially recruits who are still learning the tenets of good soldiering.

He said provocative behavior can lead to dangerous situations and undermine the trust between the Army and the public.

Mwewa reiterated that the Zambia Army remains committed to preserving the sovereignty defending the territorial integrity of the Republic of Zambia, and contributing to the maintenance of world peace.

He called for cooperation to maintain peace and harmony in the country and communities.
