The Zambia Metrology Agency (ZMA) has seized 15 bags of mealie meal from a shop in the State lodge area after a public complaint raised on suspicion that the product was underweight. A member of the public reported that mealie meal purchased from the shop appeared to be underweight, prompting ZMA inspectors to investigate the matter.
Upon inspecting the purchased bags, ZMA confirmed that they were indeed underweight. Following this confirmation, inspectors proceeded to the shop to conduct a broader inspection of the particular brand in question.
Preliminary investigations revealed that 13 of the 25 kg bags of mealie meal bags of the same brand weighed an average of 22 kg, leading to the seizure of the underweight bags. Additionally, two bags from a different brand were also confiscated for further investigation after equally weighing below the declared quantity.
A subsequent random inspection at the manufacturing plant of the mealie meal brand showed that the bags weighed at the plant were compliant with the required standards.
ZMA has since initiated an investigation into the matter to determine the cause of the discrepancy. The Agency urges members of the public to remain vigilant when purchasing mealie meal and to report any suspicions of underweight products.
Customers have the right to report any concerns about underweight products they encounter on the market.
It is within the ZMA mandate to ensure that products on the market are compliant with the Metrology Act.
ZMA is a statutory body under Ministry of Commerce Trade and Industry that oversee and regulate measurement standards.
Note : ZMA carries random and routine inspections on various products on the market to check if they are in compliance with with Metrology Act.
