Zambia Moves Toward 24-Hour Economy as Cabinet Extends Business Hours

The Government of Zambia has approved the extension of business and operating hours to 24 hours as part of a broader strategy to stimulate economic growth and improve service delivery across the country.

Minister of Information and Media, Cornelius Mweetwa, announced the decision in a statement seen by ZED GOSSIP that following the Cabinet meeting held on 16 March 2026, chaired by President Hakainde Hichilema.

Mweetwa stated that the move will apply to business houses, markets, and bus stations nationwide, and is aimed at unlocking new economic opportunities, increasing productivity, and enhancing competitiveness across various sectors.

He added that the initiative is expected to create more employment opportunities while improving access to services for citizens, as more supermarkets, markets, and transport hubs begin operating around the clock.

In addition to the extended business hours, the Minister noted that Cabinet also approved several legislative measures, including the Education (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks to reinforce the provision of free education in public institutions.

The government reiterated that the decisions form part of ongoing efforts to promote inclusive development and improve the livelihoods of Zambians.
