…but welcomes idea

Democratic Union (DU) President Ackim Antony Njobvu has expressed reservations about Zambia’s readiness to implement a 24-hour economy, citing concerns over infrastructure, labour laws, and security.

Njobvu emphasized that while the initiative is welcome, the country needs to address basic issues first, such as amending the labour act to allow citizens to work for multiple companies and ensuring uninterrupted electricity supply.

Speaking on Christian Nation’s “The Chambers”, Njobvu questioned whether Zesco can provide 24-hour electricity amidst ongoing load shedding.

He also highlighted security concerns, questioning as to whether Zambia police has enough resources and manpower to be able to provide adequate security to citizens.

The outspoken politician stressed the need for government institutions to be available to provide services around the clock, but questioned as to whether government is ready for this.

“It is a welcome move as it aims to increase production levels, but without addressing the issues I have raised, I doubt that UPND will implement this. These are some issues us will implement after the August elections,” he said.

Njobvu’s comments come as the government explores ways to boost economic activity and create jobs.

The 24-hour economy concept aims to increase productivity and economic growth by encouraging businesses to operate beyond traditional hours. However, experts say it requires significant infrastructure investments and policy changes.
