Health Minister SYLVIA MASEBO says 28,000 new HIV infections were recorded in Zambia this year.
Ms. MASEBO says despite a drop in new infections from 38,000 the previous years, there is need to address the problem.
Speaking during World AIDS Day Commemorations in Lusaka today, Ms. MASEBO said Zambia has seen progress in providing treatment to adults while the numbers of children accessing treatment remains low.
And UN Resident Coordinator BEATRICE MUTALI said if inequalities are left unattended, it will undermine the progress made in eradicating HIV and AIDS in the world.
And US Ambassador to Zambia MICHAEL GONZALEZ said his government supports Zambia in stopping transmission so that HIV can no longer be a health threat.
And House of Chiefs Chairperson, Senior Chief NKULA said traditional leaders are ready to support Government in implementing policies aimed at combating HIV and AIDS.
Kembe Member of Parliament PRINCESS KASUNE who has lived with HIV since 1997 said HIV and AIDS is not a death sentence as access to medication has been made easy.
The World’ AIDS Day theme is “Equalise! Closing the Gaps”.
