ZESCO has signed three Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Power Construction Corporation of China for the development of three power projects in Zambia.

These are; the Framework Cooperation Agreement for the supplying, delivery and installation of rooftop solar system projects in Zambia, the Engineering, Procurement and Construction agreement of 100 megawatts Kariba North Solar photovoltaic power plant and, the Engineering Procurement and Construction Agreement for 100 megawatts for the Kafue Lower Solar PhotoVoltaic Power Plant.

The three projects are aimed at fixing the current load shedding which the country is experiencing.

President Hakainde Hichilema stated that Government is fully aware of the negative impacts of the energy insecurity on the economy hence the resolve and determination to find a sustainable solution.

President Hichilema revealed that once the three deals are actualised, load shedding will be a thing of the past as stipulated in the agreements.

“We are aware of the challenges in the energy sector and the cascading effects on the economy and our people’s livelihoods, especially the most vulnerable in our society, the women and the youths. The current drought has exposed our vulnerability, however we must emerge out of this crisis even stronger as a nation.”

“We are determined to diversify our energy mix away from the dependence on hydro electricity which is susceptible to the negative effects of drought as is the case currently due to climate change,” said President Hichilema.

The President stated that Zambia had become comfortable with the power it had until the drought came into play.

He said his administration remains focused on strengthening diplomatic ties, attracting foreign investment, and promoting economic development in Zambia.

ZESCO Managing Director Victor Mapani signed on the MoUs on behalf of ZESCO while Chairperson of the Power China International MA Chen Guanfu signed for China.
