The Minister of Youth, Sport and Arts, Honourable Elvis C. Nkandu, MP, today officiated at the launch of the budget for the highly anticipated World Boxing Council (WBC) International Bantamweight Championship, set to take place on 24th May 2025 at the Government Complex in Lusaka.

In a speech read for him by Assistant Director Sport, Mr Gibson Muyaule during a breakfast meeting hosted by Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions at Grand Palace Hotel, Hon. Nkandu announced that Zambia’s own African Boxing Union (ABU) champion, David Mwale, will face off against Ghanaian contender Michael Decardi Nelson in what promises to be a historic showdown.

“This prestigious event will showcase Zambia’s boxing prowess on the global stage and revive memories of legendary victories such as Lottie Mwale’s triumph over Ray Acquaye in 1990,” Hon. Nkandu said.
The event, backed by a K1.2 million budget, will feature 11 international bouts, drawing top boxing talent from Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, and Ghana. The championship will also bring in renowned officials from countries such as Spain, Tunisia, South Africa, Namibia, and Ghana.

“This is more than just a sports event; it is a celebration of resilience, mental strength, and national pride,” the minister emphasized, highlighting the government’s commitment to supporting sports development, especially in disciplines like boxing which continue to elevate Zambia’s profile globally.

He further urged the corporate sector to take advantage of sponsorship opportunities created by Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions, noting that such partnerships are vital for nurturing talent and promoting Zambia’s athletes on international platforms.

“As promoters and stakeholders, your support will not only ensure the event’s success but also inspire the next generation of Zambian sports heroes,” he said.

The launch concluded with a call to action for unity and collaboration to make the upcoming championship a resounding success.
