Zambian anaesthesiologist Dr. Mack Kalenga has won the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists’ Rising Star Award for advancing safe surgery in a country with fewer than 40 anaesthesiologists for 20 million people.
Dr. Kalenga leads anaesthesia for Zambia’s national renal transplant programme at UTH and co-leads a nationwide study on anaesthesia gaps in public hospitals.
He also runs simulation training and safety initiatives.
“This recognition reflects the effort of many anaesthesia providers I work with daily. It highlights the urgent need for national investment in training, infrastructure, and standards,” he stated.
The WFSA praised his clinical leadership, mentorship, and advocacy for safer surgical systems.
