The Zambia National Education Coalition (ZANEC) together with Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) have wondered why some individuals are questioning the free education policy, now law that is being offered by President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration.

The stakeholders have advised that the issue is beyond politics, but one that ensures every child has access to an education despite their family status.

Speaking Sunday morning during a Crown TV – sponsored Public Forum in Lusaka, ZANEC chairperson Henry Kabwe commended the government for enacting the Education (Amendment) Bill of 2026.

He said the move to make free education permanent in law is commendable, as it protects learners from policy reversals in future.

The educationist however warned that legal provisions alone will not guarantee universal access unless children are officially documented at birth.

Kabwe noted that birth registration is a foundational step for planning, budgeting, and tracking learners under thr the Free Education Programme, which government backed with K2.4 billion in the 2026 national budget.

Kabwe said, instead of criticizing and politicizing free education, focus should be ensuring that the concerns under the policy are addressed with a concerted approach.

Meanwhile, ZCTU youth chairperson Ezra Zulu noted that a lot of young people’s lives will be saved through free education.

Zulu noted that free education had brought relief to parents who previously were not able to send their children to school due to lack of fees.

He added that the labour market welcomed the enactment of free education in totality, though acknowledging the need to address stakeholders’ concerns.
