Zesco Limited managing director Victor Mapani says the power utility has taken back 100 megawatts (MW) from the 420MW that is normally exported to help mitigate the eight-hour load-shedding being implemented in the country.

Featuring on Diamond Television’s COSTA programme last night, Mr Mapani said it is not true that the company prefers exporting electricity at the expense of serving the domestic consumers.

“We have bilateral agreements with those countries such that they also do supply us. For instance, Chama and Lundazi just got connected to our grid but they were supplied by Malawi for many years,” he said.

“But we have taken back 100MW of the export power to support our lifeline power supply out of the 420MW and this is just about 18 percent of our total production.”
