LUSAKA, Zambia – Zambia is not expected to return to nationwide load shedding this year or in the foreseeable future following significant improvements in electricity generation and continued investments in the country’s energy sector.
According to ZESCO Managing Director Justin Loongo, the country’s power supply situation has stabilized due to measures aimed at increasing electricity generation and strengthening the reliability of the national grid.
Speaking in a statement made available to ZNBC News, Mr. Loongo said Zambia’s improved electricity outlook has been driven by increased power generation from hydroelectric, thermal, and solar energy sources.
He added that stronger collaboration with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and Independent Power Traders has also contributed significantly to enhancing the country’s energy security.
Improved Power Generation Strengthens National Grid
Mr. Loongo noted that investments made across the power sector have increased the resilience of Zambia’s electricity system compared to previous years when the country experienced widespread load management.
He explained that the additional generation capacity will help ensure a stable power supply for households, businesses, mines, industries, and other key sectors that depend on reliable electricity.
The ZESCO chief said the utility company remains committed to meeting the country’s growing energy demands while supporting economic growth through improved service delivery.
Isolated Outages Still Possible
Despite the positive outlook, Mr. Loongo cautioned that isolated power interruptions may still occur in some parts of the country.
He attributed such outages to vandalism of critical electricity infrastructure, equipment theft, and occasional network faults that can affect local supply.
Mr. Loongo urged members of the public to report any cases of vandalism, suspicious activities, damaged power infrastructure, or unplanned outages through ZESCO customer service channels and offices nationwide.
Media Tour Planned for Power Stations
Meanwhile, ZESCO has announced plans to conduct a media tour of selected power generation facilities next week in Maamba, Livingstone, and surrounding areas.
According to Mr. Loongo, the tour will provide journalists and stakeholders with first-hand information on ongoing efforts to secure Zambia’s electricity supply.
The visit will include both ZESCO-owned power generation plants and partner-operated thermal power stations that contribute to the national grid.
ZESCO Reaffirms Commitment to Reliable Electricity Supply
Mr. Loongo reiterated that ZESCO remains focused on improving customer service and maintaining open communication with stakeholders as the country continues to strengthen its energy sector.
The latest assurance comes as many Zambians remain concerned about electricity supply following previous periods of load shedding linked to reduced water levels and power generation challenges.
With increased investment in hydro, thermal, and solar energy projects, ZESCO says the country is now in a stronger position to maintain a stable electricity supply and support national development goals.
