18-Year-Old Mufulira Girl Arrested for Allegedly Posting False Gang Rape Story on Facebook

Mufulira, Zambia – April 24, 2026 – Police in Mufulira District have arrested an 18-year-old female juvenile for allegedly publishing false information using electronic means, after she reportedly posted alarming claims on Facebook suggesting that a minor had been gang raped.

According to Copperbelt Province Police Commanding Officer Mwala Yuyi, the suspect allegedly shared a photo on social media showing a young girl lying down, claiming the child had been gang raped by junkies in Mufulira.

Concerned Resident Reported the Post to Police

The post sparked concern among members of the public, prompting a concerned resident to visit Mufulira Central Police Station to inquire about the alleged gang rape incident and what action police had taken.

Following the report, police immediately launched investigations into the matter.

Police Discover Incident Never Happened

After pursuing the case, police discovered that the alleged gang rape incident did not occur anywhere in Mufulira or Zambia.

This led officers to summon the teenager for questioning, in the presence of her elder sisters.

During the interviews, the suspect reportedly admitted that she had indeed published the false and alarming information online.

“In this matter, a member of public reported that he had come across a certain posting on social media which depicted a young schoolgirl lying on the ground. It was further alleged that the girl had been gang raped by junkies in Mufulira,” said Yuyi.

Teen Charged for Publishing False Information Electronically

Police have since charged and arrested the 18-year-old girl, who is believed to be from Chibolya Compound in Mufulira, for the offence of Publishing False Information Electronically.

Authorities have warned members of the public against spreading unverified information on social media, stating that such acts cause unnecessary panic and may mislead the public.

The suspect remains in police custody as investigations continue.
