ARTISTS REJECT CONSTRUCTION OF FILLING STATION AT LUSAKA PLAYHOUSE

ARTISTS in Lusaka yesterday met and drafted a petition to the Lusaka City Council (LCC) not to approve the plan to construct a filling station at the Lusaka Playhouse car park.
Organizer, Chama Fumba, popularly known as Pilato, says when it comes to giving planning permission, as a planning authority, the Lusaka City Council is guided by the Urban and Regional Planning Act No. 3 of 2015.
Fumba says the land in question is not a property of Lusaka City Council but property of the Lusaka Theater Cooperation Society and that the Society entered into a lease agreement with two companies to lease part of the Lusaka play house which stands at plot number 2637 corner of Church Road and Nasser Road.
He says as per procedure, before any major development can be undertaken, the developer is obliged to cause a notice of intent hence the bill board that was mounted at the play house, giving room for members of the public to raise objections if any adding that the notice ran from the 7th to 21st April 2022.
“The city council has not received any written objections but has received numerous verbal objections and with that, the local authority will review the development and make further consultations to ensure that public interest is upheld.
“This afternoon, artists met at Lusaka Playhouse to discuss this development as part of a consultation process with another meeting happening on Sunday. We also signed a petition that will be submitted to the council as part of our objection of the proposed lease,” Fumba said.
