LUSAKA, Zambia – Zambian music artist and commentator OC has publicly expressed support for giving President Hakainde Hichilema another opportunity to continue implementing his administration’s economic and development agenda, arguing that long-term reforms require consistency and stability to yield meaningful results.

In a lengthy statement shared on social media, OC acknowledged that he has spent the last four years openly criticizing President Hichilema and the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) on several issues. However, he said leadership should be judged fairly by considering both achievements and shortcomings.

The artist explained that after reflecting on Zambia’s economic situation and studying global economic and geopolitical trends, he had concluded that frequent changes in government can sometimes disrupt long-term development plans and slow economic progress.

According to OC, building a strong economy, attracting investment, strengthening institutions, and creating sustainable jobs are complex processes that often take years to achieve.

He noted that governments frequently inherit challenges from their predecessors and require sufficient time to implement reforms before citizens can fully experience the benefits.

OC argued that while democratic transitions are important, they can also interrupt ongoing programmes and policy initiatives before their outcomes become visible.

The musician pointed to the economic challenges inherited by the UPND administration when it assumed office, including debt pressures, fiscal constraints, and reduced investor confidence.

He said significant efforts have since been made to stabilize and rebuild key sectors of the economy, adding that changing administrations often requires time for new leaders to establish priorities, appoint officials, and roll out fresh policies.

The artist stressed that Zambia’s development should not be viewed through a purely political lens but rather through a broader assessment of what is likely to deliver long-term prosperity for citizens.

OC also paid tribute to opposition leaders, including former President Edgar Lungu and Socialist Party leader Dr. Fred M’membe, whom he described as important contributors to Zambia’s political landscape.

Despite his respect for alternative political leaders, he said continuity should be seriously considered when evaluating Zambia’s future development path.

The musician questioned why, more than six decades after independence, many Zambians continue to struggle to benefit fully from the country’s abundant natural resources and economic potential.

He argued that issues such as unemployment, the high cost of living, energy challenges, and economic recovery cannot be resolved overnight regardless of which political party is in power.

According to OC, meaningful solutions require stability, policy consistency, responsible governance, and sustained implementation of long-term reforms.

He maintained that while he may not agree with President Hichilema on every issue, he believes allowing the current administration additional time could provide the continuity needed to complete ongoing programmes and realize their intended outcomes.

The artist concluded by stating that Zambia’s future should be determined through careful evaluation of policies and national interests rather than political emotions or party affiliations.

His comments have since generated debate on social media, with supporters and critics weighing in on the role of continuity, economic reforms, and leadership ahead of the 2026 General Election.
