CHURCH MOTHER BODIES TO SUPPORT IMPLEMENTATION OF THE CHILDREN’S CODE ACT

Seven Church mother bodies have met to dicuss the newly enacted Children’s Code Act, with a pledge to use their moral and spiritual influence to support its effective implementation.

The Church mother bodies comprising the Council of Churches in Zambia (CCZ), The Evangelical Fellowship of Zambia (EFZ), The Catholic Diocese of Ndola, CMML, The Seventh Day Adventist, The Independent Churches of Zambia (ICOZ),and Apostle Council of Zambia, among others met in Ndola to dicuss the act and how collaboration can be enhanced on matters of children protection and enhancement of their rights.

Various submissions were made, ranging from the need to ensure the Act is disseminated timely , effectively and efficiently, in order for it to be fully appreciated and understood by members of the public.

Director for Child Development, under the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, Ms. Bridget Moya appreciated the role of the church in the promotion and enhancement of Children’s rights.

She said it is important that the Church and government establishes a strong working relationship that promotes child development and safeguarding.

Ms. Moya said the law has provided a mandate to coordinate child development and therefore requires linkages that promote strategic planning for creation of child protection measures.

And CCZ Ndola Chairperson, Reverand Chilekwa Mulenga, admitted that the act is very progressive and that the church stands ready to help in ensuring that it is implemented within the church.

Reverand Mulenga, further appreciated that the meeting has been eye opening and gives the church an opportunity to share the information while ensuring that engagement meetings are sustained in order to plan on how to supplement government’s efforts with regards to children’s welfare.

“For us,this is Ministry, the child is very critical and we shall double our efforts as a church to ensure that the child grows spiritually and morally in line with the promotion of national values and principles”Reverand Mulenga assured.

He said the church will also continue collaborating with the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, to see how issues of child protection can be promoted and enhanced both in the short and long term.
