51,500 CIVIL SERVANTS TRANSFERED TO LOCAL AUTHORITIES

Government has started the transfer of 51,500 civil servants from the government to the local authorities.

This follows the approval of the Revised National Decentralisation Policy by Cabinet, in accordance with the Constitution.

Chief Government Spokesperson, CHUSHI KASANDA says eight functions under the six
devolving sectors will be transferred to the local authorities in a phased manner in 2023.

Ms KASANDA, who is also Information and Media Minister, says human resource will also be attached from the Central Government to local authorities.

She said the functions are from the Ministry of Transport and Logistics, Ministry of youth, Sport and Arts, Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Ministry of Health and Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock .

Ms KASANDA says the transfer of these functions is aimed at improving delivery of services to the people, and improving citizen participation in local governance and developmental issues.
She said in a statement issued to ZNBC News that government has since provided mechanisms for the smooth movement of accompanying human resource, operating assets and financing, with clearly spelt out work relationships and the two administration system involving Civic and Civil Administration.

Ms KASANDA explained that of the 51,500, 50,549 are from the Ministry of Health , 756 employees from Fisheries and Livestock, 99 from Transport and Logistics, while 101 are from the Ministry of Tourism with seven from the ministry Youth, Sport and Arts.
