On July 17, the U.S. Embassy in Zambia, through the Public Affairs Small Grants Program, awarded $152,000 (K2.9 million) to nine Zambian community-based organizations to expand economic opportunity, improve health and education, and fight corruption in communities in six provinces.
The Public Affairs Small Grants Program provides financial support from the American people directly to Zambian community organizations committed to improving the lives of community members through sustainable projects that bolster economic development, democracy and governance, health, and education. The program prioritizes funding for nonprofit organizations with innovative project ideas that reach traditionally underserved areas or groups.
The U.S. Embassy is proud to provide these meaningful funding opportunities to organizations developing their own solutions to address inadequacies within their communities. Grants were selected through a merit-based review process that assessed their projects’ objectives, organizational capacity, and focus areas. Grants awarded this year will support the following organizations and projects in Central, Copperbelt, Lusaka, Muchinga, Southern, and Western provinces:
• Empowerment Initiative for Rural Women and Adolescents will empower rural adolescent girls with life, literacy, and digital skills for better health and education outcomes.
• Funzeleo will conduct a teacher training program to expose educators to techniques for integrating Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) practical skills into their classroom teaching.
• The Girl Up project seeks to empower young girls with STEM skills and tools to amplify their opportunities to pursue careers in STEM.
• Mother of Millions Foundation’s women’s empowerment and mentorship program will support women with financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and business skills.
• Munu Ka Yumbwa Cerebral Palsy will lead programs to enhance education and healthcare support for children with neurodevelopmental disorders.
• Visionary Students Initiative will carry out advocacy programs in schools and communities to promote mental health wellness for young women while encouraging community service and volunteerism.
• Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia will establish knowledge and skill hubs in secondary schools and transform traditional school gardens into green spaces for adolescents, youth, and teachers to learn climate change interventions.
• Word Smash Poetry will use creative arts to promote freedom of expression, social accountability, transparency, and accountability in public service delivery.
• Zambians Promoting Leadership in America Foundation will promote accountable governance in the utilization of public resources in agriculture, health, and education sectors.
