FOLLOWING the 5-0 defeat Zambia suffered at the hands of Japan at the ongoing Women’s World Cup, former Kabushi member of Parliament Bowman Lusambo has proposed a ban on the use of social media during the tournament and suggested regulating access to mobile phones to help the players maintain focus and concentration.

Lusambo, expressed concern over the disappointing performance of the Zambian women’s national football team, the Copper Queens, during their debut World Cup appearance.
“I could not help but notice that [the] team morale and coordination was absent and the usual high team spirit was missing.”

“Everyone in the team, from the captain [Barbara Banda] to the coach[Bruce Mwape] had an off day. In football, there is no way that the entire team could have a bad day in the same game,” Lusambo remarked.

While acknowledging some off-field issues surrounding the team, Lusambo highlighted the lack of discipline as a significant factor contributing to the lackluster performance
He particularly pointed out the excessive use of social media, especially TikTok, by the players during their camp in New Zealand
He urged senior government officials, including minister of Youth, Sports and Arts, Elvis Nkandu, who were accompanying the team, to take immediate action to instill discipline in the Copper Queens camp.

Emphasizing the importance of the tournament and the expectations of over 20 million Zambians, Lusambo called on the players to prioritize their performance on the field over tourist activities.

He reminded the team that they carry the hopes and aspirations of the entire nation and wished them the best of luck in their upcoming match against Spain on Wednesday.
