CLEANING Association of Zambia (CAZ) will constitute a team to monitor compliance of the new revised minimum wages for cleaners by employers to ensure members benefit accordingly.

CAZ president Lawrence Makumbi said the association is working with Government to devise measures to ensure that the new revised minimum wage for cleaners is strictly adhered to.

Mr Makumbi said in an interview that CAZ has encountered challenges with some employers who are not paying the minimum wages, hence the need for Government to devise mechanisms to compel them to comply.

“We welcome the new revised minimum wages, but our cry is for Government through the Ministry of Labour [and Social Security] to ensure that this time around, employers adhere to this,” he said.

“In the past, we have all witnessed the low adherence levels of employers to implement the revised minimum wages as they end up just being on paper, so the ministry should take this measure seriously.”

Cleaners, like guards, pump attendants, receptionists and assistant sales persons, fall under the general orders category, which has categories one to six.

Minister of Labour and Social Security Brenda Tambatamba said on Monday last week that in category one, workers will be getting a monthly minimum of K2,313.10 while those in category six will be going home with a monthly minimum of K4,099.77 starting January 1 next year.
