WHAT began as a normal work day for 33-year-old electrician, Morris Muchimba ended in tragedy as his life was cut short after he was electrocuted while working on a power line at a Zambia Sugar farm in Mazabuka.

Muchimba, employed by Momchi Engineering Company, was part of a team contracted to replace an isolator/interlink on a 33KV Rushmore line.

Ideally, both sides of the line should be de-energized before commencement of work to completely cut off the flow of electricity.

However, reports indicate that only one side was switched off, leaving the other side live and posing a danger.

According to Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Auxensio Daka who confirmed the incident, only one side of the power line was de-energized at the time of the incident.

Following safety protocols, Muchimba reportedly attempted to ground the lines before commencing work.

However, Daka stated that the remaining live line resulted in his electrocution and eventual death.

The incident occurred around 8:00 yesterday.

Police arrived at the scene after being notified by Muchimba’s brother, Osborn Muchimba, 37.

Authorities observed the body still hanging on the power pole and noted severe burns on the chest, hands, and face.

“The body has been transported to the Mazabuka General Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination,” Daka said. “Investigations into the death are ongoing.”
