SECOND QUARTER 2024 CRIME STATISTICS
August 6, 2024-The Zambia Police Service recorded a total of 17,833 criminal cases countrywide during the second quarter of 2024, marking an increase from the 16,203 cases recorded during the same period in 2023.
Lusaka Province reported the highest number of cases at 5,463, accounting for 30.63% of the total. Copperbelt Province followed with 2,382 cases (13.35%), while Southern Province recorded 1,758 cases (9.85%).
Other provinces reported as follows: North Western (1,585 cases, 8.88%), Eastern (1,519 cases, 8.52%), Luapula (1,058 cases, 5.93%), Central (1,037 cases, 5.81%), Western (983 cases, 5.51%), Northern (930 cases, 5.21%), Muchinga (527 cases, 2.95%), Tazara (315 cases, 1.76%), and Airport Division with the lowest at 276 cases (1.54%).
A total of 9,504 arrests were made, representing an arrest rate of 53.29%, a slight decrease from the 55.29% arrest rate of 2023 when 8,959 arrests were made.
Detailed Crime Breakdown:
• Murder Cases: Muchinga and Copperbelt led with 23 cases each, followed by Central (22), Lusaka and Eastern (20 each), Southern (15), Western (14), North Western (13), Luapula (10), Northern (9), Tazara (2), and Airport with no cases.
• Aggravated Robbery: Lusaka had the highest with 87 cases, followed by Eastern (26), Copperbelt (25), Central (12), Western (6), Southern and Northern (5 each), Tazara (4), Luapula and North Western (1 each), and Airport with none.
• Rape: Lusaka recorded the highest number with 9 cases, followed by Central and Southern (7 each), Copperbelt and Luapula (6 each), Eastern (4), North Western (3), Muchinga and Tazara (2 each), Western (1), with Northern and Airport recording none.
• Theft of Motor Vehicle: Lusaka recorded 45 cases, followed by Eastern (27), Copperbelt (15), Northern and Southern (8 each), Central (6), Muchinga (2), Western and North Western (1 each), with Luapula, Airport, and Tazara recording none.
• Stock Theft: Southern Province had the highest with 143 cases, followed by Eastern (108), Western (106), Central (103), Lusaka (60), Copperbelt (27), North Western (19), Muchinga and Luapula (14 each), Northern (13), Tazara (4), and Airport (3).
• Arson: Eastern recorded 16 cases, followed by Central and North Western (13 each), Northern and Lusaka (11 each), Western and Luapula (9 each), Muchinga and Southern (7 each), Copperbelt (4), Tazara (2), and Airport with none.
• Theft: Lusaka reported the highest with 1,691 cases, followed by Copperbelt (634), North Western (404), Southern (352), Eastern (347), Luapula (256), Central (246), Northern (239), Western (192), Muchinga (92), Airport (61), and Tazara (40).
• Burglary and Theft: Lusaka led with 374 cases, followed by Copperbelt (190), Eastern (159), Southern (142), North Western (139), Western (94), Luapula (64), Central (63), Northern (50), Muchinga (39), Tazara (32), and Airport (23).
• Housebreaking and Theft: Lusaka had the highest number with 175 cases, followed by Copperbelt (129), Southern (89), Eastern and Northern (68 each), Central and Western (41 each), North Western (38), Luapula (26), Muchinga (15), Airport and Tazara (9 each).
• Assault OABH: Lusaka recorded the highest number of cases at 1,195, followed by Copperbelt (565), North Western (545), Southern (476), Luapula (305), Eastern (295), Northern (290), Western (244), Central (119), Tazara (115), Airport (111), and Muchinga (109).
• Other Breakings: Lusaka reported 190 cases, followed by Copperbelt (153), Eastern (121), North Western (114), Southern (102), Central (85), Luapula (71), Western and Northern (47 each), Muchinga (32), Tazara (20), and Airport (8).
The total value of property stolen in the second quarter of 2024 was K168,541,539.70, compared to K121,834,442.00 in 2023. The total value of recovered property was K22,362,029.87, compared to K43,708,791.00 in 2023. The total value of damaged property remained consistent at K3,362,336.00 for both years.
