THE Zambia Police Service has launched an investigation into the suspected murder of Lendson Lungu, a 35-year-old resident of Garden House, Lusaka, who died on Sunday, following a severe beating allegedly over betting money.
The incident occurred last Friday at City Market, where Lungu, a trader, was reportedly playing a game of pool and won K210.
According to reports, a group of individuals, demanded that Lungu hand over his winnings.
When he refused, the group allegedly dragged him to Njashi Road behind City Market and brutally assaulted him.
Lungu’s condition worsened after the attack. His friends initially rushed him to Kanyama Level One Hospital, where he was treated for severe injuries, including what doctors described as internal temperature injuries.
Due to the extent of his injuries, Lungu was referred to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH), but he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.
The police were notified of the incident on Monday, by Lungu’s elder brother, David Zulu, 38, of Mandevu Compound.
Zulu reported that he received a call on the evening of the assault from a man identified as Joseph, informing him that his brother had been beaten.
However, Zulu was out of town at the time and could not immediately assist.
Upon returning to Lusaka the following day, Zulu visited his brother and confirmed the assault.
Despite receiving medical treatment, Lungu’s condition deteriorated over the weekend, and he passed away at Zulu’s home in Mandevu Compound.
The police are currently awaiting the results of a postmortem examination to determine the exact cause of death and an inquiry file has been opened with investigation ongoing.
Police spokesperson Rae Hamoonga confirmed the death but said the initial assault was not reported to the police at the time it occurred.
He has urged anyone with information about the incident or the suspects involved to come forward to assist in the investigation.
“The Zambia Police Service is committed to ensuring that justice is served in this matter,” Hamoonga stated.
