IN a vibrant and electrifying visit to Twikakatane Market in Lusaka’s Matero Constituency, Democratic Union (DU) president Ackim Antony Njobvu was greeted with a thunderous reception around 10:00 hours, Friday.
Traders, mostly women, briefly abandoned their stands and walked alongside the opposition leader, filling the air with songs of praise as he toured the bustling market accompanied by party Secretary General Kaunda Phiri.
The energy was palpable as Njobvu engaged with traders, listening intently to their challenges such as scanty shelter leaving goods vulnerable to the elements, tight capital stifling growth, and relentless load shedding disrupting business rhythms.
Acknowledging these hardships, Njobvu pledged actionable solutions if elected Republican President in 2026.
“As DU, we will ensure your voices are heard and your businesses thrive,” he said, outlining plans to upgrade market infrastructure, expand affordable financing, and tackle energy woes.
Secretary General Phiri echoed the urgency, bemoaning the lack of adequate shelters and sanitation facilities, like toilets, that traders desperately need.
“The time for real change is now, and only through DU can we achieve that. Give us the mandate to address your challenges by voting us in next year,” Njobvu urged, emphasizing a commitment to uplifting Zambia’s bustling informal sector.
“It’s refreshing to see a leader who understands our struggles,” said Gladys Mwanza, a vegetable vendor, as Njobvu’s message kindled hope for tangible improvements.
The visit underscores DU’s grassroots push for inclusive growth, signaling support for traders who fuel Zambia’s economy.
The opposition leader has recently enjoyed support among citizens who have seen DU as an alternative party ahead of next year’s general elections.
