POLICE CONFIRM TWO SHOT IN CHOMA OPERATION

The Zambia Police has confirmed two shooting incidents in Choma’s Mwapona Compound which left two people injured during an operation to restore order on 26th February, 2026.

This was while Police were dispersing a mob that was throwing stones at officers who had responded to reports of suspected criminals in the area.

Around 11:00 hours on the material day, Police officers responded to a call from a Mwapona resident who had reported that a male had entered his premises after the community had risen against him with intent for mob justice.

According to Southern Province Commissioner of Police, Moono Namalongo, the situation became tense as the said male and his alleged associates began throwing stones at the officers.

He states that in an effort to restore order, officers discharged warning shots, during the process, the two victims were struck by stray bullets.

The injured are 23-year-old John Hamapuma, who sustained a deep bullet wound to the left shoulder and was initially taken to Shampande Clinic, later referred to Choma General Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, 29-year-old Agent Muchanga, a shopkeeper at Mwapona Market, sustained a gunshot wound to the upper part of the head and was rushed to Choma General Hospital, where he is currently admitted.
