The Zambia Police Service in Choma District of Southern Province is investigating a shooting incident which was reported at Choma Central Police Station on March 4, 2026, at 23:00 hours.

Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo says the incident is reported to have occurred between 22:00 hours and 22:56 hours on March 4, 2026, at Green Park, Kakompe area, Choma District.

He says a 36-year-old businessman of Green Park, Kakompe area reported via cellphone that he had shot at an unknown male suspect who had broken into the house of one of his tenants, who was out of town at the time.

Brief facts of the matter are that the reporter was inside his house within the same yard, working on his phone using the internet installed at the premises, when he noticed an interruption to the internet connection, a situation that led him to go outside to check the problem while armed with a pistol.

Upon going outside, he saw two unknown persons emerging from the tenant’s house, wearing masks on their faces and armed with golf sticks and a knife.

Mr Moono says One of the suspects advanced towards him with a golf stick, prompting him fired a warning shot, but the suspect continued advancing.

This prompted him to fire at the suspect, who then retreated and ran out through a small door leading to the main gate, which had been forced to open while the other suspect jumped over the wall fence and escaped.

He says Police officers rushed to the scene, where the suspect who had been shot was found outside the wall fence, approximately 20 metres from the shooting point with his body lying face down in a pool of rainwater, with a mask on his face and without a shirt.

A physical inspection of the body revealed two bullet wounds on the left and right sides of the ribs, and the suspect was also bleeding from the nose while a pair of pliers, a screwdriver, a CCTV camera, a television remote control, and a small feature phone were found in his pockets.

At the tenant’s house, a mortice lock on the main door was found damaged, and the door is believed to have been the point of entry and exit while inside the house, household items were found scattered, and it was noticed that a television set, whose size and value are yet to be ascertained, was missing.

Police say further checks around the premises led to the recovery of two golf sticks within the yard and a knife at the gate with fibre cables for the internet also found uprooted, which is believed to have caused the internet interruption.

The body was later picked and deposited at Choma General Hospital Mortuary, awaiting identification, postmortem examination, and burial.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
