As journalists mark World Press Freedom Day, Democratic Union (DU) president Ackim Antony Njobvu has called for greater investment in the media profession and decent pay for journalists, arguing that a motivated press corps serves the nation better.
And Njobvu has urged government to ensure that measures are put in place that will guarantee the safety of journalists in view of the general elections.
Njobvu says the media’s role in elections is critical, hence, the need to ensure that they report freely and without intimidation from political players.
In a statement to mark this year’s (2026) world press freedom day, Njobvu says his party – the DU values the role the media plays in the governance of the nation.
“The media are critical to democracy. We must invest in the profession, ensuring that journalists get decent pay for the work they do.”
“A motivated journalist, one who is paid well and works in dignity, can deliver effectively and hold power to account without fear or favour,” he noted.
The outspoken politician also urged authorities and political players to protect journalists, especially as Zambia heads toward the 13 August 2026 general elections.
“The protection of the media is non-negotiable, particularly during elections when the public relies on accurate, timely information,” he added.
World Press Freedom Day is commemorated globally on 3 May to defend media independence and honour journalists who face risks in their line of duty.
