Police in Choma have arrested one of their own officers for allegedly staging a robbery and stealing cash and property valued at over K32,000.

According to Southern Province Police Commissioner Moono Namalongo, the suspect—whose identity has not been disclosed—is accused of orchestrating a fake armed robbery in which K28,886 and other valuables were stolen.

The incident was reported on May 4, 2026, around 18:50 hours, by 32-year-old businesswoman Dorothy Malemia of Chandamali Compound.

Victim Attacked Near Choma Town Centre Mobile Money Booth

Ms Malemia, who operates a mobile money booth at Choma Town Centre, told police that she was approached by a masked man armed with what appeared to be a pistol. The suspect allegedly threatened to shoot her before grabbing her bag containing money and personal items.

The stolen items reportedly included:

K28,886 cash
National Registration Card (NRC)
Earpods valued at K280
Three mobile phones worth K3,400

The total value of the stolen cash and items was estimated at K32,566.

Suspect Apprehended by Members of the Public

Commissioner Namalongo explained that Malemia had reported for work earlier that day at around 08:00 hours and carried out her mobile money transactions as usual.

Before closing her booth, she secured her cash and phones in a bag—moments before the suspect allegedly attacked.

After the robbery, Malemia raised an alarm, prompting members of the public to chase the suspect. He was apprehended a short distance away and the stolen bag was recovered with all items intact, which were later returned to the victim.

Police Discover “Gun” Was a Toy Pistol

Police officers who arrived at the scene detained the suspect and launched investigations. It was later discovered that the weapon used in the alleged robbery was not a real firearm but a toy pistol.

“The suspect has since been identified as a police officer and remains in custody in connection with the offence. Investigations are ongoing,” Commissioner Namalongo said.

Police Condemn Incident

Authorities have condemned the alleged act, describing it as a serious breach of trust and professionalism within the police service.

The case has sparked public debate, with many calling for strict punishment if the officer is found guilty, as the incident has the potential to damage public confidence in law enforcement.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
