The Democratic Union has joined the Catholic Church and the nation in mourning Archbishop Emeritus Telesphore George Mpundu, describing him as a “voice of conscience” for Zambia.
Party President Ackim Antony Njobvu extended sympathies to Archbishop of Lusaka Most Rev. Dr. Alick Banda, the clergy, religious, and faithful of the Archdiocese of Lusaka following Mpundu’s passing.
“Archbishop Mpundu was a distinguished shepherd and a voice of conscience for our nation,” the statement read. “His lifelong commitment to pastoral service, leadership, and advocacy for justice inspired Zambians across faiths and political divides,” Njobvu said.
The DU President further said Mpundu’s example reminded Zambians that true leadership meant standing with the people, defending human dignity, and speaking truth to power.
“The party prays for the repose of his soul and and we hope his legacy of service and justice would continue to guide efforts to build a Zambia “founded on fairness, dignity, and peace,” he added.
Archbishop Emeritus Mpundu served as Archbishop of Lusaka from 2004 until his retirement in 2018.
