President Hakainde Hichilema has paid a heartfelt tribute to former Vice President Dr Guy Lindsay Scott, describing him as a true Zambian patriot whose lifetime of public service left a lasting mark on the country’s history.
Dr Scott died on Wednesday at the age of 82, prompting an outpouring of condolences from across the nation. In a message issued following his death, President Hichilema extended sympathies to Dr Scott’s wife, Mrs Charlotte Scott, his children and the entire Scott family, assuring them that the Government and the people of Zambia stand with them during their time of grief.
“It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the passing of Dr Guy Scott, former Vice-President of the Republic of Zambia,” President Hichilema said, adding that the nation is united in mourning one of its distinguished leaders.
The President praised Dr Scott for dedicating many years of his life to serving Zambia in various leadership positions. He noted that Dr Scott served as Vice President of the Republic and later stepped in as Acting President following the death of President Michael Sata in October 2014, guiding the country through a difficult constitutional transition with stability and respect for democratic principles.
President Hichilema said Dr Scott’s calm leadership during that period demonstrated his commitment to constitutional order and national unity, describing it as one of the defining moments of his public service.
Beyond national politics, the Head of State also recognised Dr Scott’s contribution to Zambia’s agricultural sector, recalling his service as Minister of Agriculture where he helped advance policies aimed at strengthening food production and supporting the country’s farming industry.
President Hichilema described Dr Scott as a leader who genuinely loved Zambia and devoted himself to the service of its people. He said the late statesman’s life is a reminder that Zambia belongs to all who call it home and that serving the nation remains one of the highest callings.
In recognition of his distinguished service and contribution to the country, President Hichilema announced that Government has accorded Dr Scott a State Funeral. The State Funeral will honour his decades of public service and his role in shaping Zambia’s democratic and political development.
The President urged Zambians to honour Dr Scott’s memory by continuing to work together in building a united, peaceful and prosperous nation, saying the late former Vice President devoted much of his energy to the country’s progress.
He also offered prayers for the Scott family, asking God to grant them strength during this difficult period and eternal peace for the late statesman.
Dr Guy Scott served as Zambia’s Vice President from 2011 to 2014 under the late President Michael Sata before becoming Acting President following President Sata’s death. He also previously served as Minister of Agriculture and remained one of Zambia’s most respected political figures. His passing marks the end of an era in Zambian politics, with many remembering him for his leadership, intellect and unwavering commitment to public service.
