Police Investigating Assault of Garry Nkombo During Mazabuka Nomination Filing

Mazabuka, Zambia – May 20, 2026 — The Zambia Police Service in Mazabuka District has launched investigations into a case of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious damage to property involving former Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament Garry Nkombo.

According to a press statement issued by Southern Province Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo, the incident was reported at Mazabuka Central Police Station on May 20, 2026, around 11:00 hours.

Police say Mr. Garry Nkombo, aged 60, of Mulungushi Road in Mazabuka, reported that he was allegedly assaulted by Bilden Shalooba, a man identified only as Mcman, and a group of suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) supporters.

The alleged assault happened earlier in the day at approximately 09:30 hours at the Mazabuka Civic Centre, where Nkombo had gone to file his nomination papers as an independent candidate.

Garry Nkombo Sustained Injuries, Property Damaged

According to police, the former lawmaker sustained injuries including a bruised left arm, a painful right arm, and general body pains during the incident.

In addition to the physical injuries, his personal property including a shirt and sunglasses was reportedly damaged during the alleged attack.

“Mr. Garry Nkombo reported that he was assaulted by Mr. Bilden Shalooba, Mr. Mcman, whose other names are not known, and a group of suspected members of the United Party for National Development (UPND),” the statement read.

Police Rescued Nkombo During Nomination Process

Police revealed that after the alleged assault broke out, officers at the scene intervened and managed to rescue Nkombo from the situation.
Despite the incident, he was still able to successfully file his nomination papers afterward.

Brief facts released by police indicate that the suspected group allegedly forced their way through the gate at the Civic Centre before allegedly manhandling and assaulting him.

No Arrests Yet as Investigations Continue
The Zambia Police Service confirmed that no arrests have been made so far, but investigations are actively underway to identify and apprehend all suspects connected to the matter.

“No arrest has been made at this stage. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend all suspects involved in the matter,” police stated.

Police Warn Against Electoral Violence

Meanwhile, the Zambia Police Service in Southern Province has warned political party supporters and aspiring candidates against engaging in violence, intimidation, or any acts likely to disturb public order during the electoral period.

Police stressed that any individuals found engaging in unlawful conduct before, during, or after elections will face the full force of the law.

“The Zambia Police Service in Southern Province warns that any acts of violence, intimidation, or public disorder before, during, or after the elections will not be tolerated,” the statement added.

The incident comes amid growing political tensions in parts of Zambia as candidates continue filing nominations ahead of the country’s upcoming elections.
