Court orders three sureties, surrender of travel documents as trial starts November 3

Lusaka, Zambia24 — 28-09-2026 — Lusaka Archbishop Alick Banda has been granted bail in the sum of K80,000 pending commencement of trial in a case in which he is accused of unlawful possession of a motor vehicle believed to be the property of the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA).
Magistrate Mwandu Nakazwe granted the bail after the State indicated that it had no objection to the application by the defence.
Magistrate Nakazwe said the Criminal Procedure Code does not bar the court from granting bail for offences that are bailable.
“Since the State does not object to the bail conditions, I have no objection but to grant the accused bail in his own recognisance in the sum of K80,000,” she said.

The court ordered Archbishop Banda to provide three working sureties, each bound in the sum of K50,000 on their own recognisance.
Magistrate Nakazwe said the three sureties must come from reputable organisations and would be required to appear before the court for interviews.
She further ordered Archbishop Banda to surrender all travel documents to the court as part of the bail conditions.
The court directed that the Archbishop remain in remand custody until all the bail conditions have been fulfilled.
Earlier, Archbishop Banda pleaded not guilty to the charge of unlawful possession of a motor vehicle believed to be the property of ZRA.
The matter has been adjourned to November 3, 2026, for commencement of trial.
Archbishop Banda was represented by lawyers Geoffrey Chimankata, Bonaventure Mutale, Musaku Chisanka, Tresford Chali, Mandela Nkunika and John Sangwa.
The State was represented by Chali Hambayi, Frank Sikazwe and M. Chuzongo, while the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) was also represented.
