Monze Town Council has ordered the immediate closure of the Hungry Lion Monze branch and suspended its Certificate of Compliance after inspections found the premises operating under unsanitary conditions.
According to a Closure Order and Notice of Suspension issued under Sections 34 and 43(4)(d) of the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019, the action followed inspections conducted on September 2 and September 28, 2026.
Assistant Director of Public Health Felix Buleke signed the order, which suspended the Certificate of Compliance effective September 28, while the closure took effect at 15:00 hours the same day.
During the closure period, the proprietor, manager, employees and agents are prohibited from preparing, handling, selling or distributing food until written clearance is issued following a satisfactory re‑inspection.
The council said an authorised health officer found the restaurant operating under conditions that posed a risk to public health. Kitchen and food preparation areas were described as filthy, with accumulated dirt, grease and food residues on floors, walls, surfaces, utensils and equipment.

Council public relations officer Kanchele Kanchele added that the surroundings were unclean, with accumulated refuse and blocked drainage leading to stagnant wastewater.
“The conditions created a risk of food contamination and posed a potential health hazard to consumers,” Mr Kanchele said.
He explained that the suspension was necessitated by continued non‑compliance and the need to prevent the business from operating under hazardous conditions.
The restaurant has been directed to unblock the sewer line, maintain the drainage system, thoroughly clean and sanitise all food preparation areas, and remove accumulated refuse. Pest‑control measures and proper food storage must also be implemented, while contaminated or spoiled food must be safely disposed of.
Mr Kanchele said reopening will only be permitted once health inspectors are satisfied that all food safety requirements have been met.
