Allow Live Court Coverage
Dickson Jere

This morning I was privileged to be a panelist at the launch of the Legal Media Handbook which has been formulated to help journalists in covering court cases in Zambia.

The launch was graced by Constitutional Court Judge Palan Mulonda who was accompanied by other senior Judiciary staff.

I made the following points:

1. The Judiciary should immediately open up and allow live media coverage of the court proceedings especially on public interest matters such as the Presidential election petitions.

2. The Judiciary should allow taking of pictures inside the Courtrooms before and after the sessions. This is done in most jurisdictions.

3. The Judiciary website should be updated daily with latest Judgments and Rulings to keep the public and the media up to date with the news.

4. Journalists must invest in training especially those covering courts so that they should know how to simplify Court Judgments for ordinary people.

The Handbook has been made possible but the Southern African Institute for Policy and Research (Saipar) which runs a very useful website for Court Judgments called Zambia Lii.
