The Muzungu Syndrome!
By Dickson Jere

It is deep rooted in society even in developed world where the same “Muzungus” come from. There are certain places and clubs that are restricted to certain people who have achieved certain “levels” in society. You do not just become!

Look at Rotary and Lions Clubs. They usually meet in hotels and you do not just join. A member must invite you to their meetings first where you are “assessed” before you are formally proposed and seconded to join. You cannot just walk fron my Matero and appear at Pamodzi Hotel for Rotary Meeting…you will be chased! Money or no money…

Same with some golf clubs. Most of them require a new member to be introduced by an existing member. The old member even slhas for vouch for the behaviour of his recruit! If they misbehave, the old member takes the heat…

So are some of the neighbourhoods. You need connections to get a plot. Ati it is already sold but meanwhile they just want one of their number to buy and make a team. So, us from Matero, cannot just walk there and buy a plot even if you have money. It is what it is!

Look at some private schools. Despite the good grades of your child, you need to be connected to get a place. Others even gives preference to parents who already have children at that particular school even with not too good grades. Us from Matero, they will tell us that our children have been put on “waitlist” but those with connection to the “Muzungu Syndrome” gets the school places.

The unfair world continues…
Some Muzungus cannot even enter certain places even in their countries because they are lesser “Muzungus”. Talk of St Andrews Golf Club…very restricted membership and entry!

So, ya, my neighbour is a Muzungu! Yo Maps…that’s deep!

In short, such is life!
