Chasefu North Independent Member of Parliament Captain Towani Chipeta has welcomed some of President Hakainde Hichilema’s pronouncements during the official opening of the 14th National Assembly but has called for greater attention to the challenges ordinary Zambians continue to face.

Chipeta acknowledged the President’s remarks that inflation has declined but observed that many citizens are yet to experience tangible improvements in essential sectors, particularly healthcare.

She said economic progress should translate into better living conditions for ordinary people, with improvements in access to healthcare and other essential services.

The independent lawmaker also agreed with President Hichilema on the need to address illegal mining, particularly cases involving children. She described the practice as a serious concern that should be eradicated.

Chipeta further raised concerns about erratic petroleum supply, noting that fuel availability affects the factors of production and has implications for economic activity. She called for a transparent and affordable fuel supply system to support businesses and other productive sectors.

On healthcare, the Chasefu North MP questioned the composition of the 18,000 health workers reportedly employed, observing that many were support staff rather than key medical personnel needed to strengthen service delivery.

Her remarks highlight the importance of ensuring that healthcare recruitment addresses staffing gaps among essential medical professionals.

Chipeta also addressed the continued concern over cadreism, warning political cadres against intimidating public officials and interfering with government operations.

She stressed that respect for the rule of law should not merely be expressed in statements but must be demonstrated through practical actions.

The lawmaker said the President’s address to the 14th National Assembly provided a blueprint for the Government’s policy direction over the next five years, while underscoring the need for its pronouncements to translate into meaningful improvements in people’s lives.

Her observations touch on key issues facing Zambia, including the cost of living, healthcare staffing, fuel supply, illegal mining and the conduct of political cadres.

As the Government advances its policy agenda, the concerns raised by Chipeta place emphasis on the need for citizens to experience tangible benefits from economic progress and for public institutions to operate in an environment that respects the rule of law.
