Aspiring Chilubi Constituency Member of Parliament Christabel Kalasa has called for urgent reforms to water transport safety following a tragic boat accident on Lake Bangweulu that claimed multiple lives, including young children.

In a statement to residents, Kalasa extended “deepest condolences to the families and loved ones who have lost their relatives,” describing the deaths as “a profound sorrow that has touched every corner of our community.”

“In this difficult moment, we stand united in grief and in solidarity with the affected families,” she said.

Kalasa said the incident is a “solemn reminder of the urgent need to strengthen safety measures on our waterways,” stressing that Chilubi’s economy and daily life are tied to the lake.

“Issues such as overloading, inadequate safety enforcement, and lack of proper equipment must be addressed with seriousness and urgency,” she said.

She urged community leaders, government authorities, and citizens to work together for “improved marine safety regulations, increased public awareness, and the provision of essential safety resources, including life jackets and properly regulated transport systems.”

“Our people deserve to travel safely and with dignity,” Kalasa added.

Lake Bangweulu is a key transport and fishing corridor for Chilubi District in Northern Province. Boat accidents are common, often blamed on overloading, storms, and limited enforcement of maritime rules. The Maritime Department regulates water transport, but remote fishing camps report chronic shortages of life jackets.

Official casualty figures from Tuesday’s accident had not been released by police at press time.

“Let us honour the memory of those we have lost by working together… to build a safer environment for all,” Kalasa said. “May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace, and may their families find strength and comfort during this time of mourning.”
