
Cockroach milk has once again become a global talking point after scientists behind research into the unusual substance received the 2026 Ig Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
The award recognised research into the milk produced by the Pacific beetle cockroach, scientifically known as Diploptera punctata, a species that nourishes its developing young using a milk-like substance.
Although the idea of cockroach milk may sound strange, the research itself involves serious biological and structural science. Researchers examined protein crystals produced by the cockroach and used advanced X-ray crystallography to determine their structure.
The research found that the crystals contain milk proteins that bind lipids and form an exceptionally concentrated source of nutrition for developing embryos.
One crystal was estimated to contain more than three times the energy of an equivalent mass of dairy milk. That does not mean people should start drinking cockroach milk, however. The finding relates to the nutritional needs of the developing cockroach embryos and the unusual biological properties of the protein crystals.
