The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), through its Education and Counselling Department (ECD) in Western Province, has joined other stakeholders in commemorating World Mental Health Day under the theme “Lived Experiences Heard, Real Voices, Real Change.”

According to the DEC Facebook page, the event was officiated by the Western Province Permanent Secretary, Akapelwa Simomo.

Simomo emphasized the need to establish more mental health facilities in rural areas to ensure that more people have access to mental health services and opportunities to share their experiences.

The Provincial Health Director also highlighted the need for additional human resources in mental health facilities across the Province, assuring participants of Government’s commitment to recruiting more health personnel, including mental health professionals.

The Commission appreciated its strong working relationship with the Provincial Mental Health Department, highlighting the importance of listening to people’s experiences in counselling sessions and providing individualized, authentic and compassionate support to those experiencing mental health challenges.

The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to providing counselling services to individuals experiencing substance-induced mental health conditions and intensifying community sensitization activities.

The commission said the efforts will particularly focus on young people who remain vulnerable to drug abuse and its associated mental health consequences.

Through continued collaboration, counselling and community awareness, DEC says it remains committed to ensuring that more voices are heard, individuals receive appropriate support, and meaningful change is achieved in the fight against substance abuse and its impact on mental health.
